NEW YORK (Reuters) – Peter Criss, founding member of rock band KISS, knows that many of his male fans are macho, so he is making the rounds to tell them even tough rocker guys like him can suffer from a disease usually associated with women — breast cancer.

Criss, who was the New York rock band’s drummer on and off from its founding in 1972 until 2004 and the voice on some of their most beloved classics, including the 1976 Top Ten hit “Beth” and “Hard Luck Woman“, said too many men don’t seek treatment and think breast discomfort will go away on its own.

But Criss, who discovered a lump in his left nipple in December 2007, said men need to get over their perception that breast cancer is a woman’s disease.

“It can happen to you, and when it does, if you don’t deal with it right away, with your ‘dude’ and your metal and your tattoos, you’ll go in the box and we’ll see you,” Criss told Reuters during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Criss, 63, underwent a lumpectomy in February 2008 and a mastectomy the following month under the care of Dr. Alex Swistel, director of the Weill Cornell Breast Center in New York, and he often felt odd as the only man in the waiting room.

While breast cancer among men is one hundred times less common than among women, it can be deadly. The American Cancer Society estimated there will be 1,910 new cases of male breast cancer in 2009, and about 440 U.S. men will die this year from the disease.

Criss, who is now cancer free, acknowledged that the treatment was unpleasant.

“Whoever invented (mammogram machines) had to do it in the medieval days,” he said, adding that it was nearly impossible to fit a small male breast into the machine. He called the pain “excruciating” but a worthwhile price to pay to be healthy.

Criss, who is currently working on an autobiography as well as a new rock album, said his bout with cancer had affected his songwriting.

“My lyrics are not so deep and dismal,” he said. One of the tracks on the album, expected next spring, is called “Hard Rock Knockers.”

Criss said he is sanguine about the fact that his old KISS bandmates, Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons, are currently on a North American tour of arenas with two new band members, one in the make-up of Criss’ “Catman” character and the other as ex-guitarist Ace Frehley’s “Spaceman.”

In its 1970s heyday with Criss and Frehley, KISS cranked out hit albums such as “Alive!,” and its live performances that were filled with pyrotechnics rocked audiences.

“You want to put two clones up there in our makeup, that’s great,” he said. “Must I keep putting spandex and makeup on at 70 — I don’t think I really want to do that.”

Still, Criss said he hopes his heavy metal credentials will help mitigate the stigma around breast cancer for men.

“You are no more manly a guy than me — I grew up in Brooklyn,” Criss said.

Many women wouldn’t think of skipping their annual mammogram, and men are often persuaded to get screened for prostate cancer.

But the American Cancer Society, which has long been a defender of most cancer screenings, now says the benefits of detecting many cancers, especially breast and prostate, have been overstated.

The cancer society will soon start emphasizing that screening for breast, prostate and certain other cancers can come with a real risk of overtreating many small cancers while missing cancers that are deadly.

Local cancer experts and physicians say they understand the organization’s point: Screenings aren’t perfect.

But they say people shouldn’t get the wrong idea.

“I don’t think anybody is saying, ‘Don’t get screened,’” said Dr. Charles Enke, chairman of the radiation oncology department at the Nebraska Medical Center and the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

He said the cancer society must be careful how it words its new message about screenings.

“The danger you have is that people who are reluctant to even consider screening in the first place will use that as justification to avoid it altogether,” he said.

Enke said the cancer society’s new message could be confusing because doctors generally advocate for screenings.

Dr. Stephen Lemon of the Methodist Estabrook Cancer Center said that women should not give up their annual mammograms and that men should still talk with their doctors about getting screened for prostate cancer.

Patients should talk with their doctors about the need for screenings and at what age they should have them done, said Dr. Brian Loggie of Creighton University School of Medicine.

Dr. Devin Nickol of the NU Medical Center also said patients must understand the potential risks of getting treated for a cancer that might never have harmed them.

Surgery for prostate cancer, for example, can lead to incontinence and impotence, he said. Chemotherapy can cause hair loss, nausea and increased risk of infections.

Enke said what’s needed is more research on better ways for doctors to determine which cancers must be treated aggressively and which can be treated minimally or left alone and observed.

It can be hard for people to accept the idea that some cancers are not dangerous and that some might go away on their own, researchers say.

Lemon said there has been some progress on research to help doctors know how aggressively to treat certain cancers.

A test that became available two years ago can help doctors determine whether a woman should be treated with chemotherapy or with a pill that has less-severe side effects, he said.

The cancer society announced Wednesday it was changing its message about screenings.

“We don’t want people to panic,” said Dr. Otis Brawley, chief medical officer of the cancer society. But “the advantages to screening have been exaggerated.”

The change was spurred in part by a new analysis in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Researchers determined that prostate cancer screening and breast cancer screening are finding cancers that don’t need to be found because they would never spread and kill or even be noticed if left alone. That has led to a huge increase in cancer diagnoses because, without screening, those innocuous cancers would go undetected.

At the same time, both screening tests are not making much of a dent in the number of cancers that are deadly.

That might be because the deadly prostate cancers have already spread at the time of screening. And many lethal breast cancers grow so fast they spring up between mammograms.

(Springfield) — A Springfield bus driver won’t lose a day of pay for wearing a pink tie in support of breast cancer research.

The Springfield Mass Transit District has reversed the suspension for driver Bill Jones, who had been facing punishment for wearing the pink tie.

The SMTD uniform has a blue tie, and drivers aren’t allowed to change their uniform without permissions.

Jones says he wore the tie to support October’s Breast Cancer Awareness campaign.

The SMTD’s Linda Tisdale said Tuesday that she now realizes the significance of Jones’ story and his punishment, and has rescinded his suspension.

Tisdale says she fully supports Breast Cancer Awareness and the local “Real Men Wear Pink” program.

The SMTD has now cleared all drivers to wear pink on Fridays in October to support the cause.

But there’s no word if Jones will wear a pink tie this Friday.

TUSTIN, Calif. (AP) — Peregrine Pharmaceuticals Inc. said Wednesday its drug candidate bavituximab prompted an improvement in response rates in advanced breast cancer patients during a midstage clinical trial.

The company said its experimental drug bavituximab, in combination with Sanofi-Aventis‘ chemotherapy drug Taxotere, prompted a 61 percent objective response rate in 46-patient midstage study.

Peregrine said the data compares favorably with separate and prior published study showing Taxotere alone prompted a 41 percent response rate in advanced breast cancer patients.

Since the two studies are separate and have different variables, they can’t actually be scientifically compared, though companies often use incomparable studies as a tool in assessing the benefit of a developing drug.

Peregrine is testing bavituximab as an antivirus and cancer treatment. It is designed to stick to a piece of a cell structure that is normally only found inside cells, but is exposed on the surface if the cell is infected with certain viruses or becomes cancerous.

The company said the combination of bavituximab and Taxotere, which is also called docetaxel, warrants further study.

Shares of Peregrine fell 11 cents, or 3 percent, to $3.51 in afternoon trading. The stock has traded between $1.10 and $5.65 over the last 52 weeks.

Jessica Mollman led the Lady Govs (19-6, 12-2 OVC) with a match-best 13 kills. Kirstin Distler finished with 12 kills and 15 digs. Stephanie Champine and Taylor Skinner each recorded 11 kills. Champine added 13 digs and two block assists. Ilyanna Hernandez contributed 10 kills.

Sophomore Amanda Fago led the Colonels (6-17, 5-8 OVC) with 10 kills. She made only two errors in 26 total attacks for a .308 attack percentage. Kate Hendle finished with 32 assists and eight digs. Abby O’Connor led all players with 22 digs.

Austin Peay totaled 58 kills and eight service aces. Eastern Kentucky had only 39 kills.

The first set saw 12 ties and eight lead changes. Lindsey Loescher tied the score, 22-22, for the final time with an ace for EKU. The Lady Govs scored the next three points to finish off the set. A kill by Skinner and an ace by Sarah Alisaleh, sandwiched around an Eastern attack error, put APSU in front 1-0.

An 8-0 run midway through the second set gave control to the Colonels. Autumn Harms recorded two kills and three others had one each during the run. A Lady Gov attack error capped the run and put EKU in front 17-9. Austin Peay closed the gap to two, but wouldn’t get any closer. A kill by Hannah Groudle gave Eastern Kentucky a 25-20 second set victory and tied the match 1-1.

Austin Peay scored the first four points of the third set and never looked back. An ace by Champine made it 11-3. An ace by Distler stretched the lead to 14-6. Back-to-back aces by Kayla Grantham and a kill by Mollman had the Lady Govs on top 20-8. Champine’s kill ended the set, 25-9, and gave the visitors a 2-1 lead.

The fourth set remained close until the end. A kill by Groudle made it a one-point game in favor of APSU, 16-15. However, the Lady Govs went on an 8-2 run to build a 24-17 lead. Mollman’s kill two plays later ended the set, 25-18, and the match.

The Colonels wore pink socks and hair ribbons for the past two matches in support of breast cancer awareness. For every home court victory in the month of October the EKU volleyball program will donate $100 to the Susan B. Komen Foundation to help find a cure for breast cancer. The Colonels finished with six wins at home this month. The team will be donating in the name of former EKU volleyball head coach Geri Polvino, former Colonel Cindy Thomsen and former EKU athletics employee Kay Patrick.

Eastern Kentucky will play its next three matches on the road, beginning Friday at Eastern Illinois. The Colonels and the Panthers are scheduled to begin play at 8 p.m. ET.

The second lady held court at a breast cancer fundraiser Friday that drew some of Delaware’s most powerful men to the BBC Tavern and Grill in Greenville.

Jill Biden and her husband, Vice President Joe Biden, were at the newly opened restaurant to raise money for the Biden Breast Health Initiative. The nonprofit, founded by Jill Biden in 1993, aims to educate teenage girls about the value of early detection of breast cancer.

About 250 people packed the restaurant, including U.S. Sens. Ted Kaufman and Tom Carper and numerous U.S. Secret Service agents.

Attorney General Beau Biden and Congressman Mike Castle, who are expected to compete in the 2010 Senate race for Kaufman’s seat, also were on hand. Castle has already announced his intent to run for Senate.

Neither Joe nor Jill Biden spoke at the event; nor would they speak to media. Instead, they mingled with the crowd, stopping several times to shake hands and pose for pictures. At one point, Jill Biden told a greeter that she had worn a Phillies shirt under the red jacket that she and first lady Michelle Obama donned during Wednesday’s opening game of the 2009 World Series.

As the pink ribbon is the international symbol of breast cancer awareness — and since October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month — many of the attendants wore pink ribbons on their suits and dresses. Jill Biden wore a black cocktail dress with a pink pashmina shawl. The vice president wore a dark suit and a red tie.

The event was expected to raise up to $6,000, money that would go to the initiative’s Julianne E. Hammond Scholarship Fund. The fund provides financial assistance to young adults who are pursuing careers in health or education. Last year, more than 2,600 high school girls learned about breast cancer self-examinations through the initiative.

Kaufman said that breast cancer is something that will band people together regardless of their political views.

“We don’t do enough work that focuses on prevention,” he said. “We end up using treatments that cost more money. Early examination is one of those things in which the cost and the quality of care both intersect.”

For 29-year-old Meggan Keith, the decision to have both her breasts surgically removed was a logical one.

Keith is a scientist. Statistically, she knew that the genetic mutation she carried increased the risk of developing breast cancer by five times. On a personal level, she knew the devastation the disease causes: Keith watched her mother struggle to get out of bed during two bouts of breast cancer. Her mom, a nurse, died at age 36 from the disease, when Keith was 10.

“I knew I didn’t want that for myself,” Keith said.

She grew up in Ann Harbor, Mich., and now lives in Averill Park. Both she and her husband, Jamie Keith, are post-doctoral researchers at the University of Albany’s Cancer Research Center.

Keith’s DNA carries the BRCA2 mutation that can cause breast and cervical cancer. The average woman has a 12 percent chance of developing breast cancer in a lifetime, but a woman with a BRCA2 mutation has a 50 percent to 85 percent risk.

Evidence of the mutation runs like a curse through Keith’s family history. Her maternal aunt suffered from breast and lung cancer and died in her mid-30s; a grandmother had lymphoma; and a great-grandfather had breast cancer, which is rare in men.

Though she currently has no signs of breast cancer, Keith opted for a prophylactic double mastectomy — an operation that nearly eliminates her chances of getting the disease.

“I knew it was the right way to go,” she said.

As a biologist, Keith wanted to donate her breast tissue to science, but no one would take it. Keith discovered that there are tissue banks for healthy breast tissue and depositories for cancerous breast tissue and tumors. But nobody collects tissue from people like Keith who carry the genetic mutation.

“It kills me that the tissue went to waste,” she said. Researchers looking at the disease “have the beginning and the end,” but are missing everything in the middle.

Keith plans to change that. With the blessing of her UAlbany advisors, she’s trying to start a tissue bank to handle material donated by carriers of the mutation. She hopes to create cell lines from the material to research what might trigger the cancer, and find ways to prevent or reverse the disease.

Right now the only preventive therapy is prophylactic mastectomy.

It was Keith’s husband who encouraged her to get genetically tested. She’d been putting it off for years and finally did it when she was 25. At the time, the couple were dating and talking about marriage.

Curves raises funds to fight breast cancer – Fond du Lac Reporter

Fond du Lac Curves members raised $2,200 for the American Cancer Society during a breast cancer awareness event held Oct. 10 to 17 at Curves Fitness Center for Women, 810 S. Main St., according to a Curves press release.

Silent auction themed baskets were awarded to lucky purchasers at the culminating Girls Night Out party at Curves on Oct. 17, with all proceeds going to the American Cancer Society.

More than 50 baskets were donated by various businesses and Curves members, with the highest selling basket receiving a bid of $112. Donated raffle prizes also helped generate funds.

“We far exceeded our expectations, and this is amazing in these economic times,” said Angella Mueller, Curves owner.

Efforts to raise money for the American Cancer Society continue through Nov. 7, Mueller said.

New members who join by Nov. 7 and show proof of a recent mammogram or donate $25 to the American Cancer Society will receive their membership at a reduced rate. The customary service fee will be waived.

Let me start by saying that breast cancer is no longer a death sentence. If early detection can be treated and the patient may benefit from a full recovery and long life after.

In this article I will focus on prevention, or at least as far as prevention is reached. Unfortunately, no matter what you have to take preventive measures, there is always a possibility that you breast cancer.

I will list these preventive measures in English and not to chat in the medical field. I could never understand half the stuff anyway.

1. Do not drink too much. Supposedly there is a strong relationship between alcohol and breast cancer and regardless of the type of alcohol, that is. They are all bad. They say they have less than 1 drink per day. My wife is a drink about once a week, so I guess it is there. However, if you drink alcohol, drink too much juice citrus. It is supposed to reduce the risks of breastfeeding cancer.

2. Keep your weight. Assume there is a relationship between overweight and developing breast cancer, especially if you get too much weight after menopause seems that the more fat you have more estrogen and high levels of estrogen are associated with breast cancer.

3. Exercise. Sounds simple, but in the fast society can be very difficult to find time to reach the gym or the carpet or take a walk. Exercise is important to maintain a healthy weight. They say at least 30 minutes per day. My wife and I make an hour, but believe me, is not easy.

4. Stay away from fatty foods. I think this goes along with maintaining their weight. Tell them fat should not exceed 35% of total calories per day. I am not sure how to calculate it. You May want to consult your physician.

5. Aspirin. Well, it is said that aspirin is good for prevention
heart attacks and now say it is definitely a link between a regime of taking aspirin and prevention of breast cancer. One thing is that my wife and I am not at all. The last time one of us had an aspirin, 20 years ago. Hopefully to be thin, is quite good.

6. Avoid hormone. There is a link between women who
hormone therapy after menopause and breast cancer. Just do not. The risk is not only to prevent hot flushes.

7. Pesticides. What surprised me, but there is a clear link between exposure to pesticides and breast cancer. Therefore, try to use as little as possible. There are many ways natural to kill parasites. You can buy books on the subject. Just do a Google search for “natural fight against pests.

8. Antibiotics. Avoid them if possible. Excessive use of antibiotics weakens the immune system which increases the risk of breast cancer, or even any type of cancer.

And it is simple English. Follow the directions above and has an excellent chance of avoiding breast cancer.

Göran Landberg, M.D., Ph.D., of the Breakthrough Breast Cancer Research Unit, School of Cancer, Enabling Sciences and Technology at the University of Manchester, and colleagues evaluated data from 239 premenopausal patients with breast cancer who participated in a randomized trial of 2 years of adjuvant tamoxifen treatment vs. no systemic treatment. The association between recurrence-free survival and ER-alpha S118-P expression in tumor tissue was investigated.

Researchers found evidence of a statistically significant recurrence-free survival benefit from adjuvant tamoxifen, compared with no systemic treatment, among patients whose tumors had high ER-alpha S118-P expression (23.7 vs. 72.2 recurrences per 1000 person-years) but not among patients whose tumors had low expression (51.0 vs. 57.0 recurrences per 1000 person-years). ER-alpha S118-P was not associated with a benefit among untreated patients.

“Our study highlights the importance of assessing the functionality of a drug target,” the authors write. “Future studies are necessary to evaluate whether ER-alpha S118-P expression is associated with tamoxifen response among post-menopausal patients.”

Scientists are closer to discovering why some people respond to breast cancer radiotherapy better than others, according to Breast Cancer Campaign.

Dr Laura Smith, at the Leeds Institute of Molecular Medicine, University of Leeds, has been awarded a pilot grant by Breast Cancer Campaign, to study why some types of breast cancers are difficult to destroy with radiotherapy.

The grant forms part

of £2 million awarded to 20 projects in the UK and Ireland.

Previous research has shown that breast cancer cells which are difficult to destroy with radiotherapy contained reduced amounts of molecules called GRP78, PSMD9 and DARS.

Dr Smith and her team aim to find out what role these molecules play in preventing radiotherapy from working in breast cancer.

Dr Smith said, “We are grateful for this funding from Breast Cancer Campaign which we hope will lead to a way to predict how successful treatment will be in people with different types of breast cancer.”

Arlene Wilkie, Director of Research and Policy, Breast Cancer Campaign said, “This research could lead to a simple test to establish the effectiveness of radiotherapy prior to treatment. Radiotherapy is not suitable for everyone with breast cancer and this would ensure that only those who will benefit from the treatment will receive it.”

“AFP needs to be safely harnessed and developed into a drug that can be used to protect women from breast cancer,” he added.

During the study, researchers sought to determine whether administering pregnancy hormones to carcinogen-exposed rats led them to produce AFP, which in turn produces the protective effect of pregnancy in the absence of pregnancy.

They found that treatment with estrogen plus progesterone, estrogen alone or human chorionic gonadotropin reduced the incidence of mammary cancers in rats.

Furthermore, the researchers noted that each of these treatments elevated the serum level of AFP and that AFP directly inhibited the growth of breast cancer cells growing in culture, suggesting that these hormones of pregnancy are preventing breast cancer through their induction of AFP.

“The researchers have not directly demonstrated the cancer preventive activity of AFP, instead they found an association of these hormones preventing mammary tumors. None of these treatments prevented mammary tumors in 100 percent of the rats, it appears to delay mammary tumor formation and prevent breast cancer development in approximately 30 to 50 percent of the rats,” Cancer Prevention Research Editorial Board Member Powel Brown, M.D., Ph.D..

A prosecutor said during the hearing Tuesday that evidence gathering is continuing in the case of former city employee Keele Maynor. A judge ordered Maynor to return to court Jan. 5 for an update on the government’s evidence gathering in the fraud case.

Maynor resigned from her job as a city administrative assistant in December 2008, saying in an e-mail that her 5-year claim of having breast cancer was a charade.

She is charged with theft and forgery.

Her attorney, Stuart Brown, said prosecutors are trying to get records that show the amount of Maynor’s financial benefit from the fraud.
